The USAHEC staff has developed K-12 lesson plans for educational programs conducted at the USAHEC campus that use our extensive historical holdings and the Army Heritage Trail. These programs will meet Pennsylvania state educational standards, and our K-12 programs focus on age-appropriate learning objectives geared to our historical mission. The primary goal is to help students understand our nation's military heritage, and one of the key components is the use of the Army Heritage Trail, which consists of interactive exhibits that recreate important periods in Army History. These exhibits allow students the opportunity to visit a WWII barracks, interact with a Revolutionary War Soldier manning Redoubt 10 from the Battle of Yorktown or learn about life in a WWI trench. All programs are flexible, and the final program is selected in coordination with the teacher to meet each class's individual needs. To discuss or schedule special educational programming, please email the Chief of Visitor Services or call 717-245-3641. Elementary School Lesson Plan Sample High School Lesson Plan Sample |

Through our academic internship program, the USAHEC offers students opportunities for college credit, as well as the chance to gain experience outside normal academic programs. Currently, the USAHEC's academic internship program is unpaid. Undergraduate and graduate student opportunities for credit or experience provide hands-on training in applied history as practiced in a working repository. Opportunities are based on the USAHEC's needs, staff availability, and student interest. At this time, internship opportunities are available in many different areas within the organization. These include working with Visitor and Education Services guiding tours, leading education programs and creating educational materials used later by visiting students. Other opportunities include collection processing (cataloging, boxing, using preservation techniques, inventorying), conservation work, processing photographs, and working with audio/visual materials. Academic backgrounds or experience in the fields of American, military, public, and/or applied history are helpful. |
