Primary and Secondary
The USAHEC staff has developed K-12 lesson plans for educational programs conducted at the USAHEC campus that use our extensive historical holdings and the Army heritage Trail. These programs will meet Pennsylvania state educational standards. Our K-12 programs focus on age-appropriate learning objectives geared to our historical mission. The primary goal is to help students understand our nation's military heritage, using artifacts, photographs, posters, documents, and books to which they would not normally have access. All programs are flexible, and the final program is selected in coordination with the teacher to meet each class's individual needs. All of our Primary and Secondary educational programs take advantage of the Army Heritage Trail. The Trail consists of our interactive exhibits that recreate important periods in Army History. These exhibits allow students the opportunity to visit a WWII barracks, interact with a Revolutionary War soldier manning Redoubt 10 from the Battle of Yorktown or learn about what life was like in a WWI trench. To discuss or schedule special educational programming, please contact the Chief of Education Services michael.lynch2@conus.army.mil at (717) 245-3803.

College and University
AHEC offers a wealth of information and resources especially helpful to college students focused on history. We run programs for college students to help them develop their methods of research, as well as, introduce them to our collection. In addition, we recently partnered students with veterans to perform interviews as part of our Oral History program. Any student interested in a long-term experience, please see our internship information located on the Visitor Services Page. For more information on opportunities for college students contact the Chief of Education Services michael.lynch2@conus.army.mil at (717) 245-3803.

Internships
Through our academic internship program, USAHEC offers students opportunities for college credit, as well as the chance to gain experience outside of normal academic programs. Currently, USAHEC's academic internship program is unpaid. Undergraduate and graduate student opportunities for credit or experience, provide hands-on training in applied history as practiced in a working repository. Opportunities are based on AHECs needs, staff availability, and student interest. At this time, internship opportunities are available in many different areas within the organization. These include the processing, physical arrangement, and description of archival materials including personal papers, questionnaires, and documents submitted by veterans and the preparation of inventories and finding aids. Other opportunities include collection processing (cataloging, boxing, using preservation techniques, inventorying) and exhibit design (assist in development of small three dimensional exhibits for future use, research on an item or collections for use in exhibits). Academic backgrounds or experience in the fields of American, military, public, and applied history are helpful.

All applicants (for credit or for experience) need to submit an application form and a letter of interest. For academic credit, students must provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. The intern and USAHEC will work out a mutually agreeable schedule and complete a written agreement outlining responsibilities. Please click here to see a list of available internship positions at the AHEC.

For USAHEC summer internship opportunities: Note that applicants interested in summer internships (May through September) should provide all application materials by the end of February each year. Responses will be provided by the end of March. This is necessary because of the limited number of opportunities available. Applicants interested in working outside of this period should apply no less than 60 days prior to start of proposed internship.

To discuss current internship opportunities, please contact the Chief of Education Services michael.lynch2@conus.army.mil at (717) 245-3803.

Off Site
In addition to our on-site education programs, we are also able to coordinate off site visits. Our off site visits offer the unique opportunity to view some of the resources at the Army Heritage and Education Center that are contained in our "Roving Rucksack." We bring examples of artifacts, photographs, posters, documents, and books, both original and reproductions, to the site to help tell the story of the history of the Army. For more information or to schedule an off site visit, please contact the Chief of Education Services michael.lynch2@conus.army.mil at (717) 245-3803.
