To view the U.S. Army Military History Institute's three on-line photograph catalogs, just go to our website at www.usahec.org and follow the simple step-by-step instructions given below.
To view listings of images from our MOLLUS-MASS Civil War and Civil War Photograph Collections please select the following choices starting at our Research Catalog page:
1. Digital Documents (yellow tab at top)
2. Browse
3. Browse only digital finding aids
4. Databases
5. Civil War
6. DO NOT pick either of the two options
7. Enter your search terms in the "DDS Search Panel"
8. Under "Pattern" choose "Boolean" to reduce superfluous matches
9. Click on "Submit Search"
Note:
Type out FULL place names (Norfolk, not Norf), state names (Virginia, not VA), and unit types (Infantry, not Inf). Do NOT use the term "Regulars" in unit searches (12th US Infantry, not 12th Regulars).
To view our other catalog which contains approximately 39,000 listings of images from before photography to Desert Storm please select the following choices starting at our Resource Guides/Finding Aids page:
1. Under "Photograph Holdings" select "Photograph Card Catalog"
2. Enter your search terms in the "DDS Search Panel"
3. Under "Pattern" choose "Boolean" to reduce superfluous matches
4. Click on "Submit Search"
Note:
Entering search terms such as Spanish American War and Spanish-American War (with the hyphen) will net you different search results.
To view actual photo images from some of the Institute's collections that have been scanned and downloaded to our website please select the following choices starting at our Resource Guides/Finding Aids page:
1. Under "Photograph Holdings" select "Digital Photographs (by time period)"
2. Select the time period of your choice
3. Enter your search terms in the "DDS Search Panel"
4. Under "Pattern" choose "Boolean" to reduce superfluous matches
5. Click on "Submit Search"
