Information as Power

Information as Power

Welcome

Information is an element of national power along with diplomatic, military and economic power.  The current information environment challenges the United States as never before.  It has leveled the playing field for not only nation states, but non-state actors, multinational corporations and even individuals to affect strategic outcomes with minimal information infrastructure and little capital

expenditure. The Information as Power web site is an online resource that provides an electronic library of current and historical articles and documents. Its purpose is to facilitate an understanding of the information element of power in this new and difficult environment in order to better address the national security issues we currently face.  Unlike sites focused on one aspect of the information element this site attempts to broadly consider all the dimensions of the information environment: physical, informational and cognitive.

CYBERSPACE POLICY REVIEW:
Assuring a Trusted and Resilient Information and Communication Infrastructure

Information as Power Volume3

The globally-interconnected digital information and communications infrastructure known as “cyberspace” underpins almost every facet of modern society and provides critical support for the U.S. economy, civil infrastructure, public safety, and national security. Information technology has transformed the global economy and connected people and markets in ways never imagined. To realize the full benefits of the digital revolution, users must have confidence that sensitive information is secure, commerce is not compromised, and the infrastructure is not infiltrated.

Recognizing the challenges and opportunities, the President identified cybersecurity as one of the top priorities of his administration and directed an early 60-day, comprehensive review to assess U.S. policies and structures for cybersecurity.

This paper summarizes the review team’s findings and outlines initial areas of action to help the United States achieve a more reliable, resilient, and trustworthy digital infrastructure for the future.
