LIBRARY DESCRIPTION

As the award-winning library for the Army's senior educational institution, the USAWC Library plays a key role in the development of the Army's leaders. Noted for sustained, high-quality services and extensive research resources, the Library is a graduate-level special academic library supporting the College's educational, research, outreach and quality of life missions. It also serves as a primary research and information resource for organizations and individuals outside Carlisle Barracks and the Army, including Congress, DoD, other federal agencies, universities and colleges, the media and individual researchers and writers.

The highly expert and customer-friendly library staff ensures the efficient retrieval and delivery of research and information. Other services include library tours, briefings, scheduled library tutorials, current awareness and bibliography compilation, copyright support, course reserves, acquisition and distribution of curriculum texts, interlibrary loan and document delivery.

The Library offers its customers a rich and varied collection of print, electronic and other nonprint materials. Subjects covered in depth include military strategy and operations, international relations, foreign policy, regional studies, management, and economics. Supplementing a book and document collection of 165,400 volumes are 450 electronic journals and 600 print journal subscriptions in these and other subject areas, providing current information and opinion for reading and research. Library holdings include a broad cross section of domestic and foreign newspapers, Army, DoD and other official military publications, and a classified documents collection.

The Library collection also includes a large selection of videos, DVDs, audio recordings, extensive microform holdings, and the equipment needed to access these special formats.

State-of-the art electronic research and information resources include subscription and DoD online services and Internet resources. The Library's online catalog provides quick and concise information on publications held in the Library or at any department or office on Carlisle Barracks. The online catalog is available to customers through the Carlisle Barracks intranet, as well as through the Library's Internet website.

HOURS

Generally, personnel assigned to Carlisle Barracks have access to the Library anytime Root Hall is open. All others may use the Library Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Closed Federal Holidays).

LOAN POLICIES

Borrowing Privileges. We extend direct borrowing privileges to Carlisle Barracks military and civilian personnel and their families, retired military associated with Carlisle Barracks, and members of Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania institutions.

Active and retired military personnel working or residing in the Carlisle area may also request borrowing privileges. Others should contact their local library to arrange interlibrary loans.

Normally, customers may borrow circulating books, CDs, and audiocassettes for a period of 30 days, and videocassettes and DVDs for 7 days. Reference books and periodicals, to include back files, are for in library use only. The Library may recall any item on loan for mission use.

Borrower Cards. Access Services staff will register customers and provide borrower cards. The number on this card will normally be requested when materials are charged out. If a customer should forget to bring the card, the staff can readily obtain the number through the use of the online circulation system.

Circulation of Materials. During hours that the Library is staffed, circulating materials will be charged out at the Access Services Desk. During unstaffed hours, materials can be charged out manually by following the directions posted at the Access Services Desk.

Locating Materials in Stacks. The Library has open stack areas. Customers unable to locate books, journals, or other materials should ask for assistance at the Access Services Desk.

Renewals. You may renew items as long as they have not been requested by another customer. Please visit the Access Services Desk or phone 717-245-4288.

Recalls. Library customers may request holds and recalls at the Access Services Desk. You will be notified as soon as the material is available.

Lost Materials. Lost library items must be reported and restitution will be made in accordance with Library and Army policy.

Reserve Materials. Faculty may arrange to have materials placed on reserve for class use. Normally, such materials do not circulate for the duration of the course.

USAWC PUBLICATIONS

Student papers and other publications of the U.S. Army War College can be located by searching the Library catalog by title, author, subject, or keyword.

LIBRARY COMPUTERS

The USAWC Library currently maintains 29 computer workstations with printers for use by customers with valid Carlisle Barracks network accounts. These computers provide access to the Library's catalog and subscription databases, as well as the Internet, CBportal, and Microsoft Office products.

The Library also has several computers where Carlisle Barracks network accounts are not required. These computers allow visitors and others to search the Library's catalog and databases. Access to the CBportal is not available on these computers.

Computers are primarily for research use by our faculty, students, and staff. Priority is given to faculty and students. Using computers during busy times for recreational use is to be avoided.

The USAWC Library strives to maintain the computers and printers, but occasionally equipment and systems malfunction. When this occurs, notify personnel at the Access Services Desk.

Only USAWC systems personnel are authorized to load software on the computers and to modify software.

Use of USB thumb drives is not permitted on network computers.

WIRELESS ACCESS

The Library provides free wireless access to those who wish to bring their own laptop computers.

To promote a welcoming environment, the Library permits food and covered drinks.

COPIER/SCANNER

Generally, use of the photocopier is restricted to USAWC faculty, students, and staff for mission-related copying. A scanner is also available in the Library for their convenience.

BREAKOUT AREAS AND CARRELS

Several breakout areas are available in the Library for small study groups and meetings. Four are equipped with wide screen computer monitors. DVD and video viewing rooms are also available.

Library study carrels are for daily use on a first come basis. Exceptions may be made for special project needs (excluding the Strategy Research Project). Those using carrels for more than one day must register at the Access Services Desk.
