Curriculum Vitae

Professor Fred Gellert is from Detroit, Michigan and retired in 2015 with 30 years of service in the Army. He is an instructor in the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management of the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. In this position, he trains senior officers in strategic leadership and in the management of military forces at the national level.  

In the Army, COL(R) Gellert spent his first 16 years of service as an Infantry officer with assignments in mechanized, air assault (helicopter) and light infantry units up to Brigade level in Germany, Kentucky, and Hawaii. He is a veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  He taught Physics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and later served in an Army fellowship with the RAND Corporation. 

In 2003, he was designated as a Force Management officer. He has since served in staff assignments with Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) building Stryker Brigades and in the Department of the Army G8 resourcing Stryker Brigades and then planning equipment distributions for the entire Army. He served an operational assignment at Headquarters, US Army Pacific structuring and equipping all US Army forces in the Pacific and later as the Operations Officer (G-3/5/7) directing the military operations and theater engagements of Pacific-based Army forces. He most recently completed a combat deployment with the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan where he led a coalition team in building Afghan National Police forces during Operation Enduring Freedom.
